Koh Sichang vs Koh Larn

Ko Sichang vs Koh Larn: Which Island is Better?

Hi Traveler, are you deciding between Koh Sichang and Ko Lan for your next day trip from Pattaya? This blog provides a Koh Sichang vs Koh Larn comparison based on our own experiences on both islands to help you choose the right destination for you. And the honest answer is both islands are great, but for very different reasons.

What is the Difference Between Koh Sichang and Koh Larn?

Before we continue, here is the simplest way to understand these two islands:

Koh Larn is a classic beach located not too far from Pattaya. It has so many sandy beaches, clear water, water sports, restaurants, and a lively holiday atmosphere. Most tourists visiting Pattaya have heard of Koh Larn or already have it on their list. It is easy to reach, fun, and very well set up for a beach day.

Koh Sichang is a different experience altogether. It is quieter, more local, and less visited by international tourists. There is history here a royal palace, caves, viewpoints, and a real sense of everyday Thai island life. The beach scene is smaller, with just one proper sandy beach, but the atmosphere is peaceful and the prices are among the cheapest we have found anywhere in Thailand.

We have visited both islands and we will share our honest comparison across every category that matters for your trip.

Getting There From Pattaya

Koh Larn Winner for accessibility

Getting to Koh Larn from Pattaya is simple and fast. You take the public ferry directly from Bali Hai Pier in South Pattaya and arrive at the island in around 45 minutes. The ferry runs very frequently throughout the day, so you do not need to plan too carefully.

Koh Sichang A little more effort but very doable

Koh Sichang requires one extra step. First you travel from Pattaya to Sri Racha around 35–45 minutes by Grab and then take the ferry from Koh Loi Pier to the island, which takes another 45–50 minutes. It is not complicated but it does take more planning than Koh Larn.

Beaches

Koh Larn Winner for beaches

From our experience, Koh Larn is the better island if beaches are your main priority. It has six different beaches Tawaen, Samae, Tien, Nual, Ta Yai, and Monkey Beach each with its own character, white sand, and clear blue water. Whether you want a lively beach with music and water sports or a quieter bay, you have options. You can explore our full Koh Larn beach guides here Koh Larn One Day Trip From Pattaya

Koh Sichang One beach but a hidden gem

Koh Sichang has only one proper sandy swimming beach Tum Pang Beach, also known as Hat Tham Phang. But do not underestimate it. The water is clear and calm, the atmosphere is very quiet and local, and the sunbed price is only 30 THB for the whole day far cheaper than anything on Koh Larn. If you enjoy having a beach almost to yourself, Tum Pang Beach will surprise you. You can read our full review here Tum Pang Beach Koh Sichang

Things to Do

Koh Larn Better for beach fun and water sports

Koh Larn is built for entertainment. On any beach you will find banana boats, jet skis, parasailing, snorkeling trips, kayaking, and plenty of beachside restaurants and bars. If you are traveling with a group or want a fun, lively day out on the water, Koh Larn delivers. There is also a small town on the island with local food, night life options, and accommodation if you want to stay overnight.

Koh Sichang Better for exploration and history

Koh Sichang has far more to offer beyond its beach. From our experience, you can spend a full and rewarding day exploring things that Koh Larn simply does not have. The Phra Chudathut Ratchathan Palace, built in the era of King Rama V, is beautiful and historically fascinating. Chong Khao Khat is a dramatic cliff walkway with some of the best sea views we have seen anywhere near Pattaya and the sunset from there is outstanding. Talu Cave offers a short hike and panoramic views over the island. Tha Yai Tim is a unique tidal walkway that only appears at low tide.

Whichever you choose, you will have a great time in Pattaya! For more visuals, check this Thailand travel playlist.

Crowds and Atmosphere

Koh Larn is a popular and well-known destination. On Thai public holidays and weekends it can get very busy especially at Tawaen Beach, which is the most visited. If you visit on a quiet weekday it is more relaxed, but you will always find other tourists here.

Koh Sichang is a world away from that. On the days we visited, we felt like we were discovering something most tourists do not know about. The island has a genuine local atmosphere Thai families, fishermen, monks on scooters, small local restaurants. Even at Tum Pang Beach, one of the most visited spots on the island, it never feels crowded. If you are tired of tourist crowds and want to see a different side of Thailand, Koh Sichang is the answer.

Koh Sichang vs Koh Larn : Prices and Value

Both islands offer excellent value for money but in different ways and the right choice depends on what you enjoy.

Koh Sichang is cheaper overall. The sunbed at Tum Pang Beach costs just 30 THB all day. The scooter rental to explore the whole island is only 250 THB per day. Food at local restaurants on the island is priced for local people, not tourists. If you are traveling on a tight budget, Koh Sichang will stretch your money much further.

Koh Larn is good value for a full beach entertainment day. The ferry is cheaper and closer, and you get multiple beaches and water activities all in one place. The sunbeds and food are more expensive than Koh Sichang, but the beach quality is higher and there is more to do in terms of water sports.

Who Should Choose Which Island?

Our Honest : Koh Sichang vs Koh Larn

From our experience, Koh Larn wins for beaches and Koh Sichang wins for everything else. If you only have one day and you want to relax on a beautiful sandy beach in the sun, go to Koh Larn the ferry is fast, the beaches are excellent, and the water is clear. But if you want to get off the tourist trail, explore Thai history, eat local food at local prices, and enjoy a quieter pace of island life, Koh Sichang will reward you in ways that Koh Larn cannot.

Well, as we said Koh Sichang isn’t just about the beach. And Koh Larn isn’t just about being crowded. Both islands deserve a visit when you are in Pattaya.
