Walk to Hoi An Old Town: how far is it from An Bang, Cua Dai, Cam Pho and Da Nang
Can you walk to Hoi An Old Town?

Yes, but only from some areas. You can walk around the Old Town, but most people will not want to walk to Hoi An Old Town from the beach. From our experience, it all depends on where your hotel is.
Many travelers book a hotel first and ask this question later. Then they find out the Old Town is far, and they pay for a taxi every night. This blog will help you avoid that. We will show you the walking time from each area, step by step.
Here, you can check out our video to see the streets and the walk with your own eyes:
Quick answer: how far is each area if you walk to Hoi An Old Town?
- Inside the Old Town: 0 to 5 minutes on foot. Easy.
- Cam Pho (west side): about 12 minutes by walk.
- Cam Chau (east side, near the river): a short bike ride. Too far for most people to walk.
- An Bang Beach: about 4 km. Not a walk. Take a bike, scooter or Grab.
- Cua Dai Beach: about 4 to 5 km. Also not a walk.
- Da Nang city: about 30 km. You need a car or a Grab.
Can you walk to Hoi An Old Town from Cam Pho?
Yes. This is the best area if you want to walk to Hoi An Old Town every day. Cam Pho is on the west side of the Old Town, and the walk is around 12 minutes. The road is flat, so it is easy even with a small bag.
There are many guesthouses and small hotels here. The price is often lower than inside the Old Town, but you are still very close. If you want to eat dinner in the Old Town and walk back to bed, stay here.
Can you walk from An Bang Beach?
Technically yes, but we do not think you will enjoy it. An Bang is about 4 km from the Old Town. That is around one hour on foot, and the sun in Hoi An is strong. In summer it can reach 35°C (95°F).
Most people do this instead:
- Hoi An Bicycle: about 15 minutes. Many hotels give free bikes.
- Hoi An Scooter: about 8 minutes.
- Grab: 15 to 20 minutes, around 50,000 to 80,000 VND (about 70 to 115 THB).
Also, the road between the beach and the Old Town can be busy with scooters in the evening. Be careful if you ride at night.
What about Cua Dai Beach and Cam Chau?
Cua Dai is quiet and a little further than An Bang. It has fewer restaurants, so you will often go to the Old Town for food. Walking is not a good idea here too.
Cam Chau is in the middle, between the Old Town and Cua Dai. It is great if you like cycling, because you can reach both places from one hotel. Just try to ride early in the morning or late afternoon. The midday heat is tiring.
Can you walk from Da Nang to Hoi An?
No. Da Nang is around 30 km away, so please do not try. Take a Grab, a taxi or a private car. We wrote a full guide here: Da Nang to Hoi An. If you are still deciding where to sleep, read Da Nang or Hoi An: Where to Stay for First-Timers.
Is Hoi An Old Town easy to walk inside?
Yes, and this is the best part. The Old Town is small and flat. You can walk from the Japanese Covered Bridge to the river, the shops and the market in less than 30 minutes without stopping.
Here are our tips:
- Go early. Around 7 or 8 am the streets are quiet and the light is beautiful for photos.
- Wear good shoes. The old streets are not always smooth.
- Bring water. It gets hot very fast after 10 am.
- Come back in the evening. When the sun goes down, the lanterns turn on and the whole town looks different.
- Watch the moon. On the 14th day of each lunar month, the Old Town turns off the electric lights from around 6 pm. If this is why you travel, stay inside the Old Town or in Cam Pho so you can walk.

- Want to walk every day? Stay in the Old Town or Cam Pho.
- Want the beach and a slow trip? Stay in An Bang, and use a bike or Grab.
- Want to ride a bike and have both? Stay in Cam Chau.

Is it worth staying close if you want to walk to Hoi An Old Town?
From our experience, yes. When your hotel is close, you can go back for a rest in the afternoon, then walk out again at night. You also save money on taxis. For a short trip of two or three nights, this is the best choice.
