Da Nang hotel booking review: what to check before you pay (from our experience)
One of the first things every tourist worries about when planning a trip is: will the hotel actually look like the photos? Da Nang hotel booking sounds simple, but after doing it many times ourselves, we learned it can come with some unpleasant surprises. This blog provides a booking hotel Da Nang review to give you more information and help you avoid the same mistakes we made.
Our experience booking a hotel in Da Nang
We booked our room in Da Nang exactly 1 month before check-in through Booking.com. We thought that was more than enough time to secure a good room. But a day when we arrived, the hotel cancelled our reservation.
When we contacted them, they didn’t explain much, they just offered us a smaller room instead, for the same price we booked for the bigger one. Well, as I said, this isn’t just a one-time bad luck story. We have heard the same thing from other travelers too.
Is this common in Da Nang?
Yes, unfortunately it is common. Some hotels use Booking.com to get a full calendar of bookings, and then later decide which guests get which room depending on who complains and who doesn’t.
The photo is not always the room you get
Also you can experience this: the pictures on Booking.com show a room with big windows and a nice view. But when you check in, the actual room has small windows, or sometimes no window at all. The room size in the photo also looks bigger than what you actually get.
This is a common question because in some countries, photos are strictly checked before a listing goes online. However, in Da Nang or Vietnam in general, property photos are not always verified, so hotels can upload their best room’s photo and give you a different, lower category room.
How to protect yourself before booking:
- Check the most recent reviews first, not just the overall rating, old reviews may be from when the hotel first opened and looked fresh
- Look for reviews that specifically mention “different room,” “not as pictured,” or “smaller room”
- Screenshot the exact room photos and the room name/category before you pay, in case you need to show proof later
- Check the same hotel on other platforms like Agoda or Google Maps, compare photos and reviews across all of them
- Avoid hotels with only a handful of reviews or a recently created listing
The check-in trap: “cancel and pay us direct”
This is the part that surprised us the most. When we arrived to check in, the staff took us to see the room first, before confirming. The room was different from the photo we booked. When we said we wanted the room as shown in the listing, they told us: if we want that room, we need to cancel our Booking.com reservation, and then we can pay them directly at the same price.
Don’t do this. This is a common trick, and it’s exactly the setup local police in Da Nang have also warned tourists about, hotels or fake listings asking guests to cancel official bookings and pay “directly” instead, so there is no record and no protection from the platform if something goes wrong.
If this happens to you:
- Do not cancel your Booking.com reservation, even if they offer a better room for the same price
- Take photos of the room they are trying to give you, and the room in the app, side by side
- Contact Booking.com customer support immediately, while you are still standing at the front desk if possible, they can often move you to another partner hotel or refund you
- If they cancel from their side, Booking.com usually refunds automatically, so let it happen through the platform, not through a private cash payment

Is it still safe to book a hotel in Da Nang?
Yes, most of our stays in Vietnam were completely fine. Da Nang is still a wonderful place to visit, with a beautiful beach and friendly people. We don’t want to scare you away from visiting, we just want you to book smart. Think about hotel booking in Da Nang the same way you’d think about buying something online: check the seller’s history, read the recent complaints, and don’t send money outside the platform, even if it looks like a better deal.
