What is Songkran Festival Pattaya?

Songkran is the Thai New Year water festival, celebrated every April. People pour water on each other as a symbol of washing away bad luck and starting fresh. In Pattaya, the local version is called Wan Lai, an extended celebration unique to the Chonburi province.

While most of Thailand celebrates on April 13, Pattaya and the surrounding areas keep the party going until April 20. This makes Pattaya one of the longest Songkran destinations in the country. We went to Wan Lai Pattaya, and it was one of the most exciting experiences we have had here. Beach Road turns into a river of people, water trucks, and loud music.

Where to Celebrate Songkran in Pattaya

Beach Road April 19

The heart of Wan Lai Pattaya is Beach Road. The road is closed to traffic and thousands of people line up with water guns, buckets, and hoses. From our experience, the best stretch is between Central Pattaya Road and South Pattaya Road. Arrive by 9:00 AM to get a good spot before the crowds peak around midday.

Wan Lai Na Kluea April 18

Na Kluea is the northern part of Pattaya. This is one day before the main event and feels more local and relaxed. Good option if you want a more authentic experience away from the big crowds.

Wan Lai Koh Larn April 18

Yes, even Koh Larn island celebrates Wan Lai! If you are planning a Koh Larn day trip, going on April 18 means you get Songkran on a beautiful island. Ferries from Bali Hai Pier will be very busy go early.

Wan Lai Koh Sichang April 18

Koh Sichang also celebrates on April 18. This is quieter and more traditional great for families or couples who want a calmer celebration with local culture.

Best spot tip: Stay in front of Central Festival Pattaya Beach

From our experience, the best position on Beach Road is right in front of Central Festival Pattaya Beach. This area has a live music stage, DJ sets, and the most water trucks on the whole street. The energy here is incredible water is coming from every direction and the crowd is at its peak around midday.

A few tips for this spot:

• Arrive before 10:00 AM to get a good position before the crowds build up
• Stay on the beach side of the road more space to move
• 7-Eleven near Central Festival is perfect for refilling your water gun and grabbing cold drinks
• When you are ready to dry off, just walk into Central Festival mall change clothes, eat, and cool down in the air conditioning

This is honestly the best place to be on April 19. We highly recommend it!

Songkran Pattaya Tips What to Wear and Bring

This is the most common question we get. Here is our advice from experience:

Wear:

• Light, quick-dry clothes shorts and a t-shirt are perfect
• Flip flops only your shoes will get ruined
• Avoid white shirts they become transparent when wet

Bring:

• A waterproof phone case or dry bag this is essential
• Waterproof sunscreen you will be in the sun for hours
• A water gun buy one for ฿50–฿150 at any 7-Eleven
• Cash in a waterproof wallet

Leave at the hotel: passport, expensive cameras without waterproof protection, leather bags.

Cultural Side of Songkran

Songkran is more than just a water fight. The tradition of pouring water originally comes from gently pouring scented water on elders and Buddha statues as a symbol of respect and blessing. If you want to experience this side of the festival, visit The Sanctuary of Truth Pattaya or the Chi Chan Buddha Statue in the morning before the water fights begin.

Where to Stay for Songkran Pattaya 2026

Book your accommodation at least 4–6 weeks in advance. Hotels fill up fast and prices increase significantly during festival week.
