Running in Da Nang: A Local Guide to the Best Routes & Safe Places to Run

We laced up our shoes just before My Khe beach sunrise. The sand was already warm under our feet. Ahead of us, a few local runners jogged by. So that morning, we understood why running in Da Nang is one of the best ways to experience the city.

Running in Da Nang

This guide covers the best routes, plus the safest times and the local marathon dates. It works whether you’re a traveler, an expat, or training for a race.

Is Da Nang good for running?

Yes, for a few reasons. First, Da Nang sits between the sea and the mountains. So you get flat beach roads, a river path, and hilly trails, all close together. Also, traffic is calmer here than in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. On top of that, air quality is good for a big Vietnamese city. Because of this, local runners, expats, and small running clubs come out every morning, so you’ll never feel alone out there.

Best places to run in Da Nang

My Khe Beach

This is the signature route for running in Da Nang. The beach stretches around 30 kilometers along the coast, and the sand near the water is firm enough to run on barefoot. For longer distances, most runners prefer the paved path along Vo Nguyen Giap Street instead.

  • First, start near My An, opposite the beachfront hotels, for an easy out-and-back
  • Then, head north toward Son Tra Peninsula for a longer run
  • Especially at sunrise, the air is cooler, and afterward you can cool off in the water

Han River Walkway

If you’re staying in central Da Nang, this route is the easiest to reach. Wide paths run on both sides of the river, passing the Dragon Bridge and Tran Thi Ly Bridge. The west side runs about 5 km, while the east side runs about 3 km. Because it’s well lit at night, it’s also a great evening option. In fact, time it for Saturday at 9pm and you’ll catch the Dragon Bridge fire show mid-run.

Son Tra Peninsula

Want more of a challenge? Then head to Son Tra Peninsula, where the road is quiet, shaded, and climbs steadily. Some serious runners even push up toward the Lady Buddha statue and back for a real hill workout. However, this is not a beginner route, so bring water and avoid the midday heat.

Best time to run in Da Nang

Overall, timing matters more than the route itself here.

  • Time of day: early morning before 7am, or otherwise evening after 5pm
  • Best months: especially February to April, for the most comfortable weather
  • Rainy season: October to December, so check conditions first

Running events in Da Nang

The Da Nang International Marathon is the city’s signature race, running along the Han River and the beachfront. It used to happen in August, but now it runs in March instead, for cooler conditions. For example, the 2026 edition was held on March 22, and the next one is already set for March 21, 2027. Distances range from a 5K fun run up to the full 42km marathon.

If you’re training for it, our Pattaya Marathon review also has prep tips that apply here, hydration, pacing in heat, and race-day timing.

Safety tips for running in Da Nang

  • First, run early morning or evening, not midday
  • Also, stick to the beach promenade or river paths, not the road shoulder
  • Before you start, carry your phone and hydrate well
  • If you’re running Son Tra solo, let someone know your route first
  • Finally, keep your distance from the red-shanked douc langurs on Son Tra, also called “Monkey Mountain”

How Da Nang compares to running in Pattaya

If you’ve run in Thailand before, then check our guide to Running in Pattaya. Both cities have a long beach road and a growing marathon scene. However, Da Nang gives you more variety, thanks to its river paths and Son Tra hills. For a deeper look, we compare the two cities in our Da Nang vs Pattaya guide.

Where to stay for easy access to routes

For the easiest access to these routes, stay near My Khe Beach or the Han River. Meanwhile, see our Accommodation in Da Nang guide for options at different budgets. Or, if you’d rather train indoors on hot afternoons, check our Gym in Da Nang Price Comparison guide instead.

Final thoughts

Overall, running in Da Nang gives you a bit of everything: flat beach kilometers at sunrise, a scenic river run at night, and a real hill challenge on Son Tra, if you want it. So it’s one of the best ways to feel the city’s rhythm outside the usual sightseeing stops.
