Pattaya vs Phuket Thailand?

Is Pattaya Cheaper Than Phuket? One of the first questions every traveler asks when coming to Thailand is: Should I go to Pattaya or Phuket? And more importantly, which one costs less money?

Is Pattaya Cheaper Than Phuket: Hotel Prices

Cheap Hotels in Pattaya and Phuket (Budget)

In Pattaya, you can find a clean, basic hotel room for 500 to 800 THB per night. We know many people who stay like this. The rooms are basic but nice, you get AC, a bed, hot water. These cheap hotels are all over the city. You find them in Jomtien, in Soi 6, in Naklua. If you want to save money on hotels, Pattaya is the place to do it.

In Phuket, the same type of room costs 1,000 to 1,500 THB per night. Even basic rooms are more expensive.

Why? Because it’s a beach location and Phuket is more famous. You pay more money for the same thing.

Winner: Pattaya, You pay half the price!

Nice Hotels (Mid-Range)

When you want something better, Pattaya has nice hotels for 1,200 to 1,800 THB per night. For this price, you get a good hotel with a pool, sea view, AC, and hot water. These are real hotels where tourists stay.

From our experience for longterm rental, we can tell you about Laguna Beach Resort and Copacabana Jomtien , both are excellent and affordable.

Hotel in Phuket, the same type of hotel costs 2,500 to 4,000 THB per night. It’s the same hotel. Same pool. Same sea view. But you pay much more money. You’re paying for the Phuket name, not for better quality.

Winner: Pattaya, Much cheaper for the same hotel quality!

Is Pattaya Cheaper Than Phuket: Food Prices

Street Food in Phuket and Pattaya

Food in Pattaya is very cheap. We eat street food all the time. A plate of rice with chicken or pork costs 50 to 80 THB. Pad Thai costs the same, 50 to 80 THB. Grilled chicken skewers cost 20 to 40 THB per stick. You can get a coffee for 30 to 60 THB and fresh juice for 20 to 40 THB. This is real local food that Thais eat every day.

In Phuket, the same food costs much more. Rice dishes are 100 to 150 THB. Pad Thai is 80 to 120 THB. Grilled chicken is 40 to 60 THB per stick. Coffee is 50 to 80 THB. It’s the same food. Same quality. But because it’s Phuket and because many tourists go there, prices are higher.

Pattaya wins: Food costs about 50% less

When you want to sit down in a real restaurant in Pattaya, a local Thai restaurant costs 150 to 250 THB per meal. If you want seafood, it’s 250 to 400 THB. You get fresh fish, nice presentation, friendly service.

In Phuket, a local restaurant costs 300 to 500 THB. Seafood costs 500 to 800 THB. Again, it’s the same food and similar service, but you pay more money.

Pattaya is cheaper: About 40-50% less than Phuket

Is Pattaya Cheaper Than Phuket: Drinks & Nightlife

Beer Bar Phuket vs Pattaya

Pattaya has a famous nightlife. If you go to a bar, a beer costs 70 to 100 THB. A cocktail is 100 to 150 THB. Most bars have no entry fee, you just come in and order a drink. It’s relaxed and affordable.

In Phuket, especially in Patong Beach where all the tourists go, a beer costs 120 to 180 THB. A cocktail is 200 to 300 THB. Some bars charge 300 to 500 THB just to enter. Then you have to buy drinks. It’s much more expensive.

Getting Around City

Pattaya Transport

In Pattaya, there’s a local bus called a songthaew. It costs only 20 to 50 THB per ride. It goes everywhere in the city. You just stand on the street, wave at it, and get in. It stops wherever you want. This is how local people get around, it’s very cheap and easy.

If you want to be faster, you can use Grab car. A normal trip costs 60 to 150 THB. You just use the app, order a car, and it comes to you. It’s fast and reliable.

If you want total freedom, you can rent a scooter for 150 to 200 THB per day. Then you can go anywhere you want, anytime.

Phuket Transport

In Phuket, a songthaew costs 40 to 60 THB because the distances are longer. A Grab car costs 150 to 300 THB. A scooter costs 200 to 300 THB per day.

Pattaya is cheaper to get around. You save money every time you go somewhere.

Real Money Example: What You Actually Spend

Budget Traveler in Pattaya (1 day)

Let’s be honest about money. If you come to Pattaya with a small budget, here’s what you spend in one day. Your hotel room is 500 THB. Breakfast is 60 THB, maybe egg and rice. Lunch is 70 THB, noodles or fried rice. Dinner is 80 THB, same type of food. You have some coffee and a drink for 60 THB. You take a Grab car to get around, costing 100 THB. And you do one activity or visit one attraction for 200 THB.

Phuket per day budget(1 day)

Now let’s look at Phuket. Your hotel room is 1,200 THB. Meals cost 300 THB total. Transport costs 200 THB. Drinks cost 150 THB. One activity costs 500 THB.

Difference: Pattaya is more than half the price of Phuket. If you’re on a budget, this matters a lot.

Why is Phuket More Expensive?

Phuket is a tourist place. Many people from all over the world go there. Big hotel companies. Restaurant owners. Everyone knows that tourists will spend money. So they make prices higher.

Patong Beach is the main area. This is where everyone goes in Phuket. When one place gets too many tourists, prices go up. It’s simple, many tourists, high prices.

Phuket has a fancy image. People think Phuket is more “upscale” or “nice” than Pattaya. So business owners charge more money. People expect to pay more. So prices are higher.

Is Pattaya Cheaper Than Phuket: Our Honest Opinion

We live in Pattaya. We know prices, know where to eat good food and what’s worth the money.

For budget travelers: Come to Pattaya. Save your money. Stay longer. Do more activities. Explore more.

For people with more money: Phuket is nice. Beautiful beaches. Good hotels. But you pay much more. Is it worth it? That depends on what you want.

For first time to Thailand: Come to Pattaya first. It’s cheap. You can explore. Try different things. Then maybe go to Phuket later if you want to.
