Pile of Stones Koh Si Chang
Hi Traveler, have you ever visited a place that stopped you and made you think how did I not know about this? That is exactly what happened to us when we rode our scooter to the northern part of Koh Si Chang and found the Pile of Stones Koh Si Chang. No crowds, no tour guide, no ticket booth. Just rocks, history, and the sea.
The Pile of Stones on Ko Sichang is one of the most overlooked landmarks in Thailand. Most visitors to the island spend their time around the pier and the main town, which is fine, but they completely miss the northern part. That is where the real stories are. In this blog, we will tell you everything about this place and why it is worth adding to your Koh Sichang itinerary.
What is the Pile of Stones on Koh Si Chang?
The Pile of Stones is a historic landmark located on the northern tip of Koh Si Chang island in Chonburi province, Thailand. The site is connected to the early history of the Thai railway system, making it one of the most historically significant but least visited spots on the island.
The historical railway stone pile on Koh Si Chang dates back to the reign of King Rama V, when stones from Koh Si Chang were transported by sailing ships to be used as a foundation for the electric railway at Makkasan Station.
What makes this place interesting is not just the history it is also the location. The Pile of Stones sits in an area of the island that feels completely untouched. When we arrived on our scooters, we felt like we had gone back in time. The landscape around the northern cape is raw and quiet, with rocks along the coastline and a clear view of the sea that stretches all the way to the horizon.
Our Experience at the Pile of Stones
We visited the Pile of Stones as part of our northern scooter loop around Koh Si Chang. We started the morning with coffee at Sichang Boy cafe, then rode north through the hills. The road gets quieter the further north you go fewer houses, more trees, and the sound of the sea gets stronger.
The Pile of Stones appears on the right side of the road as you ride toward Laem Si Chang. You will see a sign on the road that is where you stop. We actually visited the Pile of Stones on our way back from Laem Si Chang, so if you are riding the northern loop it works perfectly in both directions. We stopped the scooters, walked closer, and took a look.

Honestly, this place is not fancy. It is not a big temple or a dramatic viewpoint. It is just a pile of stones. But if you stop and think about what these stones represent the beginning of the railway history of Thailand it becomes something completely different. That is the kind of place that stays with you after you leave the island.
From our experience, the best thing to do here is to slow down and read about what you are looking at. This is not a place where you take a quick photo and leave. The history behind these stones connects to something much bigger the modernization of Thailand during the reign of King Rama V and if you take a moment to think about that, the visit becomes something you will remember.
Is there an entry fee for the Pile of Stones?
No. The site is free to visit. You just ride there and walk around.
How to Get to the Pile of Stones on Koh Si Chang
The Pile of Stones is located in the northern part of Koh Si Chang, and the only comfortable way to reach it is by scooter or motorbike. Walking from the main town is possible but not practical the road goes uphill and it takes a long time in the heat.
How to get there from the ferry pier:
- From the pier, ride through the main town heading north
- Follow the main road uphill toward the northern part of the island
- Continue riding past Laem Sichang you will see the Novotel Resort
The ride from the pier to the Pile of Stones takes around 10-15 minutes by scooter. The road has some hills but nothing difficult for a beginner rider. Just take it easy and enjoy the view on the way up.

Best Time to Visit
Like most outdoor spots on Koh Si Chang, the Pile of Stones is best visited in the morning when the light is good and the temperature is comfortable. We went early and had the whole area to ourselves.
- November – February: Best season cool, dry, perfect visibility
- March – May: Hot but still good. Bring water and sunscreen
- June – October: Rainy season. The road can be wet and slippery on the hills, so take extra care on your scooter
Combine Your Visit With the Northern Loop
The Pile of Stones is even better when you combine it with the full northern scooter route. From our experience, the perfect half-day plan looks like this:
- Morning coffee at Sichang Boy Cafe in the main town
- Ride north toward the Pile of Stones stop, explore, learn the history
- Continue to Laem Si Chang the most beautiful viewpoint on the island, just a few minutes further north
- Ride back south for a seafood lunch near the pier
This loop gives you the best of the northern part of Koh Si Chang in one half-day. You will see things that the majority of tourists on the island never see. That alone makes it worth it.
