Do you need a license to rent a scooter on Koh Larn?
This is a common question because many tourists don’t realize Thailand still requires a valid motorcycle license, even on a small island like Koh Larn. Technically, you need an International Driving Permit (IDP) that covers motorcycles. However, in our experience, most rental shops on Koh Larn will not ask to check it before handing you the keys.

Don’t worry, if you don’t have one, you likely won’t be stopped, but if you get into an accident, your travel insurance may not cover you without it. So it’s better to be safe and bring the right documents.

Our experience: full day cost breakdown
For this article, we will show you our experience for one full day scooter trip around Koh Larn island, from Na Baan Pier all the way around the beaches.
- Scooter rental (1 day): 300 THB (gas included)
- Deposit: no cash or ID held, the shop just takes a photo of you (or your ID) and your phone number
- Total spent for the day: around 300 THB
We drove from Na Baan Pier toward Tawaen Beach first. Then continued to Samae Beach and Nual Beach (also known as Monkey Beach). The roads are narrow and some hills are steep, so we recommend going slow, especially if it’s your first time riding in Thailand.
Also, if you don’t have that many places to go and just want to hop beach to beach, you can take the songthaew (local shared minibus) on Koh Larn instead. The cost is usually 2 THB per person, one way, depending on the distance and which beach you’re heading to.
