Da Nang to Hoi An: how to get from Da Nang to Hoi An

The fastest and easiest way from Da Nang to Hoi An is a Grab car. It takes about 40 to 50 minutes, and you see the price in the app before you ride.

But Grab is not the only way. There is also a metered taxi, a shuttle minivan, a public bus, and a motorbike. In this blog we compare all of them, so you can choose the best one for your budget.

If you are staying in Da Nang first, check our things to do in Da Nang guide and our Da Nang accommodation guide.

How far is Da Nang from Hoi An?

The distance is about 30 km (19 miles). By road it takes around 40 to 50 minutes, depending on traffic and your starting point.

There are two main roads. One goes along the coast, past My Khe Beach and the beach hotels. The other goes through the city side. Grab and taxi usually choose the quickest route automatically, so you don’t need to decide.

Hoi An does not have a railway station. So if you arrive in Da Nang by train, you still need road transport for the last part.

Prices change with demand, time of day and your pickup point. Always check the price in the app first.

Grab car

From our experience, Grab is the easiest option. You open the app, enter Hoi An Ancient Town or your hotel, and you see the price before you confirm.

How much is Grab from Da Nang to Hoi An? Usually 250,000 to 350,000 VND for a car from the city or the airport. The price goes up in rush hour and when it rains.

Tips from our experience:

  • Download the Grab app and add your payment card before arriving in Vietnam. Paying by cash is also fine
  • Take a screenshot of the price before you ride.
  • Xanh SM is another ride app in Da Nang and sometimes shows a similar price. Compare both.

Taxi car

A metered taxi is a good option if you don’t have mobile data. The price is usually higher than Grab, about 350,000 to 450,000 VND.

Da Nang Airport to Hoi An

This is a very common question, because most visitors arrive by plane. You have three sensible choices outside the arrivals hall:

  • Grab or Xanh SM: book it on your phone before you leave the terminal.
  • Metered taxi: use the official taxi line outside.
  • Shuttle minivan: cheaper, but it can wait for other passengers and stops at several hotels.

Is there a bus from Da Nang to Hoi An?

Yes. Public bus 02 connects Da Nang Central Bus Station with Hoi An and continues towards Cua Dai. Older travel guides may call it LK-02.

It is one of the cheapest ways to travel between the two cities.

  • Travel time: Allow around 60–90 minutes, depending on traffic and stops

Can you take the bus from Da Nang Airport to Hoi An?

Bus 02 does not depart directly from the airport terminal. First, you’ll need to go to a suitable stop along the route.

If you arrive at Da Nang Airport with a large suitcase, a shared shuttle or private car may be more convenient. Shared shuttles also offer airport pickup and can take you closer to your hotel in Hoi An.

For the cheapest journey, the public bus is worth considering if you are already in Da Nang city and do not have much luggage.

Da Nang to Hoi An by motorbike

If you can legally ride a motorbike in Vietnam, travelling from Da Nang to Hoi An can be a fun way to explore the coast. You can enjoy the sea views and stop at places such as My Khe Beach or the Marble Mountains along the way.

A standard automatic scooter costs around 120,000–200,000 VND per day, depending on the rental shop and model. Fuel is usually extra.

Before renting, check the bike’s condition, wear a helmet and make sure your driving licence and insurance cover you for riding in Vietnam.

Hoi An

These are published starting rates from rental shops, and they change with the season. Many shops include helmets and basic insurance, so confirm before you pay.

Deposit: the shops often ask for a refundable cash deposit, usually 1,000,000 to 3,000,000 VND for a standard scooter. Some shops accept a copy of your ID instead of your passport. Try not to leave your original passport.

Licence: to ride legally in Vietnam you need a valid motorcycle licence. Riding without a valid licence can mean a fine of 2,000,000 to 4,000,000 VND, and your insurance may refuse an accident claim. Many shops do not check your documents, but that does not make it legal. Some shops advertise 50cc scooters as “no licence needed”, so ask what this means for insurance and police checks before you rely on it.

Hoi An to Da Nang: the return trip

The price is similar in the other direction. Grab from Hoi An to Da Nang starts from about 400,000 VND in some sources, because there are fewer cars waiting in Hoi An. A minivan or the bus is often easier for the return trip.
