Koh Si Chang Aquarium: Free Marine Animal Center on the Island

Hi Traveler, have you ever wondered if there is an aquarium on Koh Si Chang? Well, the answer might surprise you because yes, there is, and it is one of the most unique stops on the island. This blog provides a Koh Si Chang Aquarium review to give you more information and help you decide on your next stop on the island.

Now, what makes this place really special is that it is not a typical commercial aquarium. In fact, it is a real marine conservation center where you can get up close with hawksbill turtles, clownfish, sharks, lobsters, and so much more. On top of that, it is run by Chulalongkorn University together with local fishermen, so every visit also supports real conservation work happening right here in Thailand.

And the best part? It is completely free to enter.

So whether you are planning a full-day trip around the island or just looking for something different to do after the ferry, this is definitely a stop worth adding to your list. We will guide you through everything we experienced here, step by step.

What is the Koh Si Chang Aquarium?

The Koh Si Chang Aquarium is the local name many travelers use for the Koh Si Chang Marine Animal Bank Learning Center. This is not a commercial aquarium. It is a real marine conservation and research center run by Chulalongkorn University in collaboration with local fishermen from the island.

What Animals Can You See at the Koh Si Chang Aquarium?

Koh Si Chang Aquarium

From our experience, this is one of the most exciting free stops on the island. Here is what you can find inside:

  • Hawksbill turtles rescued sea turtles kept in large tanks, you can watch them swim very close to you
  • Sharks smaller reef species kept for research and breeding
  • Lobsters including some very large specimens in the tanks
  • Spotted clownfish (Nemo) yes, the real Nemo fish! A big favorite for kids and couples
  • Giant hermit crabs fascinating to watch up close
  • Sea urchins on display with information about their role in the ocean
  • Starfish colorful and beautiful
  • Coral living coral sections showing the ecosystem of the Gulf of Thailand
  • Horseshoe crabs a very ancient creature, always surprises first-time visitors
  • Kingfishers yes, even birds! We did not expect this at all

The variety here is really impressive for a free center. You can easily spend 30–45 minutes walking through everything.

Koh Si Chang Aquarium Museum Section

Inside the center there is also a small museum section with exhibits of inanimate objects shells, specimens, and educational panels about Thai marine life and conservation. It is simple but very informative. Even if you are not into science, it is easy to enjoy and understand.

This section is a great way to learn about the Gulf of Thailand ecosystem before you go swimming or snorkeling on the island.

Is the Koh Si Chang Aquarium free?

Yes! Admission to the Koh Si Chang Aquarium is free of charge. However, a donation is always welcome. The donations help support the research and conservation work of Chulalongkorn University and the local fishermen community. If you enjoy your visit, please consider leaving something even a small amount makes a difference.

What are the opening hours?

The Koh Si Chang Aquarium is open during daytime hours. We recommend visiting in the morning or early afternoon.

Koh Si Chang Aquarium location: The center is located near the pier area of Koh Si Chang, close to the Phra Chudadhuj Palace grounds.

Our Experience at the Koh Si Chang Aquarium

For this article, we want to share what it was actually like when we visited. Every time we come to Ko Sichang, this place is always on our list.

Koh Si Chang Aquarium

We arrived on foot from our accommodation. The entrance area is calm and not crowded at all compared to the bigger attractions on the island. Once inside, we walked slowly through the tanks and exhibits. The hawksbill turtles were our absolute favorite you can see them swimming very close to you and it feels really special.

The spotted clownfish tanks were a big surprise. We did not expect to see Nemo here!  The horseshoe crabs also caught our attention they look like creatures from another world.

The museum section gave us a lot of new information about the Thai sea and how the university and local fishermen work together to protect it.

Useful Tips Before You Swim in the Thai Sea

One of the best parts of visiting this center is the safety tips the exhibits teach you about dangerous marine animals in the Thai sea. After walking through all the tanks, here is what we learned that every swimmer should know:

  • Sea urchins very common on rocky areas. Always wear water shoes when walking on rocks near the sea. If you step on one, do not try to pull the spines out seek medical advice
  • Jellyfish more common in certain seasons. If you see them in the water, do not touch and leave the area calmly
  • Coral never touch or stand on coral. Even a small cut from coral can get infected quickly in tropical water
  • Starfish beautiful but do not pick them up or remove them from the water
  • Horseshoe crabs they look scary but are not dangerous. They are actually very ancient and harmless creatures
  • Reef sharks the small species you see in the tanks here are research species. In the open sea around Koh Si Chang, shark encounters for swimmers are very rare

Knowing these things before you go to the beach will help you swim with confidence and enjoy the Thai sea safely.

Is the Aquarium Worth Visiting?

Absolutely yes. Especially because it is free. The Koh Si Chang Aquarium is a perfect stop for:

  • Families with children Nemo fish, turtles, and hermit crabs are exciting for kids
  • Couples a unique and relaxed experience, very different from temples and beaches
  • Nature lovers real conservation work happening right in front of you
  • Anyone curious about Thai marine life you will learn something new here for sure

Plan around 30–45 minutes here. It pairs perfectly with the nearby Phra Chudadhuj Palace and Asdang Bridge for a great half-day around the pier area.
