Is Pattaya Cheaper Than Bangkok? A Real Comparison for Travelers
Is Pattaya Cheaper Than Bangkok? One of the first questions every tourist asks when they land in Bangkok is whether it is worth continuing to Pattaya and whether the prices are better.
We have stayed in both cities for long periods. This blog provides a real cost comparison so you can plan your budget and decide what works best for your trip.

Accommodation: Pattaya Wins for Budget Travelers
This is where Pattaya shows a very clear advantage.
In Bangkok, a decent hotel in a central area like Sukhumvit will cost you around 800–1,500 THB per night for a clean, basic room. If you want a sea view or a pool, expect to pay 2,000 THB and up. The city is big, and the good value areas are not always close to the tourist spots.
Accomodation in Pattaya, you can find a clean hotel with a pool for 600–1,000 THB per night. Even in Jomtien, which is quieter and more relaxed, prices stay low compared to Bangkok hotels. If you stay longer, one week or more, you can often negotiate a monthly rate that is extremely affordable.
From our experience: When we stayed in Bangkok, we booked a room at SU 22 Hotel Bangkok. It is a small, clean hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 22, good location, close to BTS, fair price for Bangkok. We made a video about it so you can check that out below.
Transport in Bangkok is More Expensive to Get Around
Bangkok has the BTS Skytrain and MRT underground, and these are actually very affordable if you stay along the main lines. A single BTS trip costs around 17–59 THB depending on how far you travel. For tourists staying in Sukhumvit, Silom, or Siam, the BTS covers most of what you need and saves you from traffic completely.
The problem is when you need to go somewhere the BTS does not reach. Bangkok is a large city, and many temples, markets, and attractions are off the train lines. A Grab car in Bangkok during rush hour can cost 150–300 THB for a short distance that would take 10 minutes without traffic. Taxis add up quickly too, especially if you are moving around a lot during the day.
In Pattaya, there is no BTS or metro, but you do not really need one. The city is much smaller. You can take a songthaew (baht bus) for only 20-30THB almost anywhere along the main routes on Beach Road and Pattaya Second Road. Renting a scooter for a full day costs around 250-300 THB and gives you total freedom to reach beaches like Jomtien or Dongtan on your own schedule.
Getting between the two cities is easy and very cheap. The bus from Pattaya to Bangkok (Ekkamai or Suvarnabhumi Airport) is only 140-150THB one way, operated by Roong Reuang Coach. You can check the full schedule and routes in our guide to North Pattaya Bus Station.
Is bangkok cheaper than pattaya? If you stay near BTS stations in Bangkok, transport costs are very manageable. But once you move beyond the train lines, costs rise fast. Pattaya’s songthaew system keeps daily transport extremely cheap for most travelers.
Food: Similar Prices, Different Experience
Street food in both cities costs about the same. A plate of Pad Kra Pao from a street stall is 50–80 THB. A bowl of noodles is 40–60 THB. You will not see a big difference here.
However, in Pattaya you will find many all-you-can-eat buffet options at very competitive prices, 199 to 299 THB for a full BBQ or hotpot. Bangkok has these too, but they tend to be slightly more expensive because of the higher rent the restaurants pay.

Sit-down restaurants and cafes in tourist areas are comparable. International food in Bangkok (especially Sukhumvit area) can be pricier because the clientele there expects it.
Is Pattaya Cheaper Than Bangkok? Both cities are affordable for food. Pattaya has an edge on BBQ and seafood buffets near the beach.
Is Pattaya Cheaper Than Bangkok? Entertainment and Activities
Bangkok has world-class museums, temples, shopping malls, and nightlife. Many of the best things, like Lumpini Park Bangkok, are completely free. You can spend a full day exploring the city without spending much money at all.
Pattaya also has free attractions, but paid activities are the focus here, speedboat trips, water parks, and beach clubs. These cost money. The famous Sanctuary of Truth, for example, has an entry fee. Many of the beach activities like jet skiing and banana boat rides add up fast if you are not careful.
If your goal is sightseeing and culture, Bangkok gives you more for free. If your goal is beach, relaxation, and entertainment, Pattaya’s paid activities are generally still cheaper than similar experiences in tourist cities around the world.
Overall Cost: Pattaya vs Bangkok, Which City Is Cheaper?
| Category | Bangkok | Pattaya |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel (budget) | 800–1,500 THB/night | 600–1,000 THB/night |
| Street food | 40–80 THB | 40–80 THB |
| Local transport | 80–150 THB per trip | 20–30 THB (songthaew) |
| Activities | Many free options | Paid activities from 250 THB |
| Monthly stay | 15,000–25,000 THB | 10,000–18,000 THB |
Our honest answer: Pattaya is cheaper overall, especially for accommodation and daily transport. Bangkok is bigger and has more free things to do culturally, but your daily spend in the city adds up faster.
For couples and expats looking to stay longer, Pattaya is the better value. For a short city trip with temples, shopping, and food markets, Bangkok is worth the slightly higher cost.
