Pattaya vs Phuket for First Time Visitors
![]()
Hi Traveler, have you ever wondered whether to visit Pattaya or Phuket for your first trip to Thailand? This blog provides a comparison of Pattaya vs Phuket for First Time Visitors to give you more information and help you decide on your next destination.
I want to be honest with you from the beginning that I live near Pattaya, and I know this city very well, and I visited Phuket only once, so my experience there is limited. But from that one visit, the biggest thing I noticed straight away was that Phuket is more expensive than Pattaya. So I will share what I know for sure, and help you understand the main differences between the two places.
Why Pattaya is Great for First-Time Visitors
From our experience, Pattaya is one of the easiest cities to visit in Thailand, especially if it is your first time. Here is why:
- It is very close to Bangkok (Beaches close to Bangkok). You can take a bus from Ekkamai Bus Terminal or North Pattaya Bus Station for around 150 THB (about 4 USD). The trip takes around 2 hours. No flight needed.
- It is affordable. Street food starts at 50–100 THB. A mid-range hotel with a beach view costs around 1,000–2,000 THB per night.
- Getting around is easy. You can use songthaews (shared mini trucks) for just 10–20 THB per ride around the city.
- There is a lot to do. From Jomtien Beach to Koh Larn island, The Sanctuary of Truth, night markets, and more you will not run out of things to see.
My One Visit to Phuket What I Noticed
I visited Phuket one time. I did not travel much around the island because the distances are bigger than in Pattaya and transport is more expensive. But here is what I can tell you from that experience:
The prices are noticeably higher than Pattaya.
- Street food prices in Phuket are actually similar to Pattaya, around 60–150 THB. But once you sit in a restaurant near Patong Beach, prices can jump to 400 – 600 THB per person. In Pattaya, you have many more cheap local options close to the beach
- Transport inside Phuket is expensive. There are no cheap songthaews like in Pattaya. You usually need a Grab car or scooter rental.
- Hotel prices near the main beaches are also higher.
The beaches I saw in Phuket are beautiful. The water was clear and the sand was nice. So if beaches are your main reason to visit Thailand, Phuket has very good ones. But you will need a bigger budget.
Getting to Phuket from Bangkok takes more planning. You need to fly, which costs at least 1,500–3,000 THB one way on budget airlines, plus time at the airport and transfers once you land.

Beaches Near Pattaya
If you want beach time around Pattaya, we have reviewed several options for you:
- Jomtien Beach Pattaya wide, calm, easy to walk to
- Dongtan Beach quieter and more relaxed
- Koh Larn Island a beautiful island just 30 minutes by ferry from Pattaya, only 60 THB roundtrip
Phuket’s beaches are famous for a reason they are truly beautiful. But since I only visited once and did not explore all of them, I prefer not to give you wrong information. For detailed Phuket beach guides, there are many other travel sites that specialize in Phuket.
So, Which One Should You Choose?
Choose Pattaya if:
- This is your first time in Thailand
- You are arriving in Bangkok and want something easy and close
- Your budget is under 20,000 THB for 5 days (excluding flights)
- You want lots of things to do without complicated planning
Consider Phuket if:
- Stunning island beaches are your main priority
- You have a bigger budget
- You are okay with flying and more expensive local transport
- You want a more resort-style experience
From our experience, Pattaya is the easier and more affordable choice for first-time visitors. Once you know Thailand a little better, Phuket makes a great second trip.
